As the premier chemical producer and one of the largest industrial energy users, no one has more at stake in the solution - or more of an ability to have an impact on - the overlapping issues of energy supply and climate change than The Dow Chemical Company.
For the foreseeable future, the U.S. will continue to rely on fossil energy to grow our economy while bridging to future alternative and renewable sources. So we must be sure to use fossil energy as efficiently as we can. As one of the world's most energy intensive companies, Dow believes energy efficiency is the quickest, cheapest and easiest way to improve the U.S. energy situation and slash carbon emissions. Since 1994, Dow has reduced its energy intensity by 22 percent, saving 1,600 trillion Btu, which has resulted in preventing 86 million metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere.
Dow is also working to address greenhouse gas emissions.
In partnership with Alstom, Dow's Oil and Gas business is developing advanced amine scrubbing technology for the removal of CO2 from low pressure flue gases produced by fossil fuel fired power plants and other major industrial emission sources. Development of this technology will be an important step towards carbon emissions reduction by the power industry.
