Showers likely consume a third of the hot water used in your home. Consider these very easy steps:

  • Install flow restrictors. If a gallon bucket is filled in less than 20 seconds with your shower fixture, you have a flow rate that exceeds  the 2.5 gallons per minute standard. You should either install flow restrictors or invest in a new shower head. While some fixtures can be quite pricey, there are  options for under $50.
  • Be conscious of shower length. If you reduce your shower time by 25 percent,  you also reduce your energy requirements by 25 percent. Taking a quick shower rather than a bath can save 20 gallons of water.
  • Don't let the water run excessively before you get in. Hundreds of gallons of unused hot water go down the drain in homes every week, because we just don't pay attention.
